Servant Leader at Work!
|
You may be one of those who feel a
sense of conviction about the need to incorporate your faith into
your leadership in your workplace…whatever the nature of your work
may be. Whether you realize it or not, you may already have
accumulated some very practical experience with the linkage between
consensus-based leadership and
Christian Servant Leadership. If you are
looking for a way to strengthen the linkage between your leadership
and your faith, then you will find encouragement in the new book
published by Consensus Consulting Group, “Servant Leader at
Work!”
This is not another warm-and-fuzzy Chicken Soup kind of book. Instead,
it is intended to catalyze activism and to stimulate a process of change in the
workplace…one leader at a time…with the objective of restoring integrity to
workplace leadership. |
The culture in many of today’s workplaces too often presents a dangerous
temptation for leaders to push their Christian faith off into the margins…as if
it were an impediment to good leadership. This book is intended to
challenge and encourage those leaders in the workplace who share the conviction
that faith is, in reality, an essential component of leading.
Author Glenn J. Conger (Owner/Principal of Consensus Consulting Group)
invites readers to examine their own practice of leadership fundamentals in the
workplace against a backdrop of Scriptural passages selected to illuminate
Jesus’ practice of Servant Leadership. The intention is to provide insight into
what Servant Leadership means within the context of today’s workplace…and where
self-interest introduces a gap between today’s reality and the cherished Servant
Leader model. Thought-provoking questions are posed at the end of each chapter
to help readers develop a sense of commitment to closing that gap.
The premise of the book is simply this: If Christ-like living is a
good model for one’s own daily life in the most general sense, then Christ-like
leadership is a good model for one’s leading in the workplace. At the
personal level, the book’s objective is to bring the faith of Christian leaders
into harmony with their style of leadership in the workplace. At a more global
level, the objective is to change the complexion of our workplaces by
encouraging the wider and more intentional practice of Servant Leadership, as
taught by the ministry of Jesus.
This book champions the notion that everyone in the workplace is a
‘leader’…even if one has no ‘followers’ in the most literal sense of the word
(that is, no direct reports). There will always be that colleague, customer,
client, or other observer who is watching…ready to draw a conclusion about the
values that seem to explain the decisions, choices, and commitments that one
makes. ‘Leading-by-example’ is happening everywhere…all the time.
One’s own experience in the workplace, or even a cursory reading of a
newspaper gives ample evidence that a large segment of society has come to
accept that the workplace justifies (perhaps even demands)
leadership behaviors that often show little resemblance to the cherished
Christian Servant Leader model. Integrity in workplace leadership seems to be
going the way of the dodo.
As much as 30 - 40% of one’s waking hours are spent in the places where one
earns his or her livelihood. Can it be that faith is being forced into the
shadows for 30 – 40% of one’s waking hours? If faith without works
is dead, then what is work without faith? There is a need for people to
make sense of it all…and to find a way to do something to stop the spiral of
decline.
