TITLE:  “You Can Successfully Manage Change

SUB-TITLE:  “Keep Your Plans for Change On-Track and Get the Results You Need

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Participants will learn to:

  • Manage natural resistance to change by engaging stakeholders in the change process.

  • Use group processes (meetings) as the preferred vehicle for soliciting and capturing the best thinking of the stakeholders, with respect to the change process.

  • Interpret and manage the dynamics of a group process, and overcome apprehensions about introducing and leading change.

  • Apply a StoryBoard ‘template’ to facilitate the group processes that are necessary for the successful management of change.

  • Forge the best thinking of the stakeholders into a consensus on what the issues are, and what to do about them.

  • Secure buy-in from the stakeholders involved in the change process, and their commitment to executable action plans for implementing change.

DESCRIPTION:
This course is appropriate for anyone who needs to:

  1. Identify organizational issues in need of attention;

  2. Develop group consensus amongst stakeholders on what those issues are; and,

  3. Secure the commitment of stakeholders to support actionable plans for addressing those issues.

The “1-2-3” sequence of activity listed immediately above inevitably leads to the introduction of change…with all the attendant natural resistance from those affected. Even thinking about the prospect of change that is yet-to-come will cause ripples in any organization…if not tidal waves. Perhaps the most critical element in the successful implementation of change is the early and continuing involvement of the ‘stakeholders’…those most involved and impacted by the change. Emotions can run high. Agendas can differ widely. It is not always easy to get everybody on the same page…and keep them there. The techniques for managing change that are presented in this course are applicable to any environment…research/innovation, marketing, quality assurance, administration, media relations, etc… The course includes a workbook for note taking and reference. The format of the course is based upon:

  • Informal Lecture with Participation by Attendees

  • Support by PowerPoint Slide Presentation

  • Ample Time for Questions, Answers, and Working Examples

Three principal benefits one could expect to result from participating are:

  1. Develop a greater sensitivity to the human dynamics involved in the process of change and a greater appreciation for the fact that resistance is best defused by engaging those affected by change in the process as early as possible.

  2. Become acquainted with leadership tools used to develop consensus within a working group regarding issues in need of change and the measures necessary to effect that change.

  3. Practice with a real example of a meeting facilitation tool that taps into the collective wisdom, vision, and energy of groups affected by change…turning their natural tendency to feel ‘victimized’ into a feeling of ‘stakeholdership’ and ‘empowerment’.

There are no requirements or prerequisites for participation in the workshop.

About “Good” Meetings How to know if one has experienced (or planned, or conducted) a “good” meeting, or a “bad” meeting.
The Cost of Failing to Reach Consensus Reaching “consensus” doesn’t mean, “caving in”.  If the group leaves the room without buy-in…there will be a real cost.
What Happens in a Meeting?  A group must go through several stages in a meeting, in order to process information and act on it.
Best Meeting Practices and StoryBoarding StoryBoarding embodies virtually all the most effective meeting practices in a single, workable format.
Specific StoryBoard Applications Where to apply StoryBoarding to meet one’s own business, civic, or personal leadership needs.
Roles in the Meeting and Preparation Certain roles must be played in a meeting to assure the most successful outcomes, and advance preparation is critical.
General Rules of Conduct in Meetings Certain behaviors can boost the effectiveness of any meeting.
The Importance of the Meeting Environment It is critical that disruption be minimized, while maintaining an atmosphere that ‘feels’ unconstrained.
The StoryBoard Template Using the StoryBoard ‘template’ requires a comprehensive understanding of the layout of the StoryBoard and the significance of the various cards and card color-codes.
Cost-Effectiveness Good meeting facilitation will more than pay for itself.
Case Study – Developing a Business Plan It is easy to capture the outcomes of a StoryBoard meeting in a hard-copy format…for distribution and archives.
Tips on Conducting the Meeting Practical tips on conducting one’s own StoryBoard-based meetings.
Some Lighter Options Team-building bells and whistles that can help to lighten-up the atmosphere of the meeting.
StoryBoard Example
(Full Session Only)
